The mandate of this department has been, and will continue to be, to provide the image-maker with an education in photographic practice that fluidly and seamlessly utilizes both traditional and digital technologies. The blending of the traditional and digital practice makes this department unique among others of its kind. Our point of view is that the computer enables us to fabricate, collage, and manipulate in a virtual world and the lens allows us to see and record in the "real world."

We maintain state-of-the-art labs, which integrate video, photography, and multimedia in a readily available and accessible way. We have no hesitancy about these post-revolutionary times, and feel the current technology has only added to the possibilities of our creativity. We recognize the implications of the digitally generated image and the potential to communicate via networks and world-wide media outlets in both general and specific ways, serving diverse needs and varied audiences. The students of MFA Photography, Video & Related Media are given not only the tools and the skills necessary to negotiate the new patterns of creativity and communication, but also the inspiration and the discipline to create meaningfully.
