A thesis show is, by definition, diverse. Nonetheless, most of this year's graduates chose to focus on their personal reactions to life in America. Some were directly inspired by American documentary photographers of the 1970s, another era in which artists were prone to question American values. Others employed a wide array of more contemporary media, including digital manipulation, appropriation, projection, video and site-specific installation. Our many foreign-born students brought their very different backgrounds to bear on the American experience. Our title, "Surrounded by America," draws attention to this common thread within a very strong and varied SVA class.
