In the Studio

My work is an installation of photographic and video portraits made in the controlled environment of the studio. With a 4x5 camera, I make a photograph, as a video camera positioned just above the still camera simultaneously records each sitter’s changing expressions, movements, and comments during the portrait-making process. The sitters are friends, acquaintances, and people who have responded to advertisements.

Installed, the photographs hang in one room, while corresponding videos play on monitors in a separate room. The static quality of the stills stands in contrast to the constant movement of the videos. The videos record how the sitters posture themselves- how they rearrange or do not rearrange themselves before each flash goes off. By the enlivening the image and comparing it to the still, the installation provides a framework to re-address certain assumptions about the processes of photography and the people represented.
