Cargo

‘Cargo’ is an unveiling of the world of cargo shipping. Consumers world-wide depend on the intricate infrastructure of global trade, an overwhelming majority of which is moved by sea with containers. As consumers, we know very little about the networks that transport goods. In the beginning of the project, I photographed a port in Staten Island which gave me an understanding of the massive local operation. As huge ships would dock and leave daily, loading and unloading hundreds of containers, it quickly became apparent that the local ports are mere hubs in an enormous network. This led to my voyage on a container ship from New York to ports in Florida, through the Panama Canal and ending in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The resulting photographs reveal the invisible network of human and technological activity.
