An Atmosphere of Uncertainty

An Atmosphere of Uncertainty is a series of photographs that deals with the difficulty of labels. The series is the result of two related themes: my own conflicted feelings about settling into a career, and adopting a social label, and my frustration with our tendency to read photographs according to the articulated word, or written label. The series consists of portraits of people in their late twenties and early thirties, as well as photographs of lists, written by some of the subjects, and detailing all of the job titles they’ve held over the past several years. The portraits are intentionally ambiguous and unattached to any one list, simultaneously arousing and frustrating the desire to read the human subjects according to the written label.
