The Ancestors Walk with Us:
Our History (Re) membered

“Art is important only to the extent that it helps in the liberation of our people”

-Elizabeth Cattlet

Photographs alone could not express the profound presence of our ancestors and their experiences, ever present in us. As I attempt to create a visual document that expresses my appreciation, I honor the resiliency of today’s everyday person of African ancestry. I am reminded of an African spiritual belief that I cling to,” The past, present and future exist simultaneously, each moment determining the next…
The Ancestors Walk with Us: Our History (Re) membered, is a testament to this belief. Ever conscious of the spirit of the ancestors, their struggles, achievements and lessons, I witness this “spirit” in the eyes of every person I have ever had the honor and privilege to photograph. Using my photographs and archival footage, I have created a video that allows my audience to experience the community as I do.
This film is dedicated to our ancestors, those featured and those unknown whose commitment continues to inspire me to work for a better future…and to people of African ancestry…everywhere.
Ase…ase.
