David + Jonathan

David + Jonathan is a non-straight street photography project. It tells an archetypal story of tragic love, inspired by Biblical references, and explores the power of ‘The Father’ (i.e. the dominant paradigm) to destroy love and life through institutional violence. It is fitting, then, that the images are in some ways themselves a subversion of dominant strategies in established fictional film and photography. In David + Jonathan, images based in ‘reality’ are transformed and used as elements of an imagined narrative. The ‘actors’ are men photographed on the street without their knowledge and composited into other background images. They are then sequenced in a transparent reinterpretation of film movement. These breaks with convention quietly encourage us to consider the control that dominant culture and morality – established through religion – have over the ‘man on the street.’
